Ante & Post Natal

Antenatal care is the care you get from health professionals during your pregnancy. You should start your antenatal care as soon as possible once you know you're pregnant.

You can refer yourself for NHS pregnancy care so you can start your care with a midwife. This is usually done with an online form. For more information, visit Pregnancy Advice which can be found on the Advice page.

Post Natal care is combined with the Child Health Surveillance development check and is carried out at the Surgery by a GP when your baby is between 6 & 9 weeks old.

Cervical Smears

The Guidance for Cervical Smears has recently changed. As of July 2025, all women and people with a cervix between the ages of 25 and 64 should go for regular cervical screening. You'll be invited for screening every 5 years from when you're 25 to 64 years old.

You'll get your first invitation a few months before you turn 25.

You may be invited more regularly if you have HPV.

If you're 65 or older, you'll only be invited if a recent test was abnormal.

You can book an appointment as soon as you get an invitation.

If you missed your last cervical screening, you do not need to wait for an invitation to book an appointment.

This is a simple, quick test which can detect the early stages of cervical cancer.

The Practice offers a comprehensive cervical smear screening service and all women in the above age groups will automatically be invited.

These tests can be carried out by specifically trained nurses.

Children's Immunisation Clinics

The Practice runs a comprehensive infant and pre-school immunisation programme, in liaison with the Health Visitor. Parents are automatically informed when their child is due for their next injection, and an appointment is given to attend one of these clinics. If you are unable to attend these clinics, appointments can be made at other times with the Practice Nurse.

Schedule of vaccinations

Child Health Surveillance Clinic

Routine developmental checks are done on babies at 6-9 weeks together with Post Natal checks for mums and are carried out at the Surgery by a GP.

Checks at 8 months and up to 5 years of age are carried out by your Health Visitor.  Please note - Immunisations cannot be given until this check has been completed.

Family Planning / Sexual Health

We offer strictly confidential advice on all methods of contraception including coils, implants and emergency contraception.

Flu and Pneumococcal Vaccinations

We particularly recommend this annually for patients with heart, chest or kidney disease, asthma, diabetes and other chronic disease. It is also recommended for those over 65 and for residents of nursing and rest homes. Please contact the reception staff in September for details of the dates of our flu vaccination clinics.

Pneumococcal Vaccinations

In most cases this is a once only vaccination recommended for patients with chest or kidney disease, asthma, diabetes and other chronic diseases - PLUS all those over 65. If you would like to discuss the advantages of this please make an appointment with the Practice Nurse.

Minor Surgery

If a minor surgical operation is needed the Doctor will give details to the Nurse who will contact you to make an appointment.

This will be performed under local anesthetic at the Surgery.

Immunisations and Vaccinations

This practice follows the national policy for childhood immunisation. Further information can be found on the NHS Immunisation Schedule website.

New additions to Schedule

Cervical Cancer can be caused by human papillomavirus types 16 and 18- recently the HPV vaccination has been introduced into the schedule for girls aged 12 to 13.  These vaccines will be administered at school by the school nurse teams.

Pharmacy First

The new Pharmacy First scheme means you can see a pharmacist about several minor illnesses and conditions you would previously have had to see your GP about. You can visit your pharmacist for a consultation and they will treat you and prescribe medication if necessary. If your condition is more serious you will be referred to a GP or hospital.

Under Pharmacy First Scheme, pharmacists can treat and prescribe medication for seven conditions. These are the conditions, and at what age, you can see the pharmacist:

    • Earache - 1 to 17 years
    • Impetigo - 1 year and over
    • Infected insect bites - 1 year and over
    • Shingles - 18 years and over
    • Sinusitis - 12 years and over
    • Sore throat - 5 years and over
    • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections - women 16-64 years

Should you contact the Surgery about one of these conditions you may be referred to a local chemist.  Normally the chemist will contact you to discuss and issue any appropriate medication.

In addition, from October 2025, the morning-after pill is now available free of charge from nearly 10,000 community pharmacies across England. No GP appointment or prescription is needed.

What’s Changed?

    • Free access at pharmacies: Women can walk into participating high street pharmacies and request emergency contraception after a brief, confidential consultation with a pharmacist.
    • No appointment required: This removes delays and cost barriers—previously, the pill could cost up to £30 or require a GP or clinic visit.
      Part of NHS expansion:
    • This is part of the NHS’s 10-Year Health Plan to shift more care into communities and reduce pressure on GPs.

Routine Vaccinations

Routine vaccinations, including childhood immunisations and adult boosters like MMR, COVID-19, and influenza, are essential for community protection and can be booked via your GP surgery or specialized clinics.

Appointments are usually made by calling reception or, in some cases, via online systems, with reminders often sent by letter, text, or phone.

Key points regarding routine vaccinations:

  • Childhood Vaccinations:These include the 6-in-1, Rotavirus, MenB, and Pneumococcal vaccines at 8, 12, and 16 weeks, and the MMR and PCV vaccines around 13 months.
  • Adult Vaccines: Routine immunisations for adults include the annual flu jab, COVID-19 boosters, and vaccines for pneumonia (65+).
  • Sceduling: When a vaccination is due, the surgery will usually contact you, but you can proactively call to book if you know your child is due.
  • Appointment Safety: Surgeries take precautions to minimize risk during appointments, such as social distancing.
  • Non NHS Services: Some vaccinations might not be covered by the NHS and may incur fees.
  • Shingles Vaccines: A vaccine to prevent shingles, a common, painful skin disease is available on the NHS to people in their 70s. The shingles vaccine is given as a single injection into the upper arm. Unlike the flu jab, you'll only need to have the vaccination once and you can have it at any time of the year.
  • RSV Vaccine: The RSV vaccine helps protect against infection with RSV, a common virus that can make babies and older adults seriously ill. It's offered on the NHS if you're pregnant, aged 75 to 79, or turned 80 after 1 September 2024.
